Design and build project to construct a new spiral bread cooling facility on the existing site

Phase 1;   A new building extension capable of housing a new double drum spiral bread cooler. The design requirements for the structure proved to be quite demanding, due to a limited amount of space to work with, poor site access and the physical requirements of the spiral bread plant.

In addition to the practical requirements of the bread cooler, Frank Roberts had requested that the extension be design in such a way that it would visually impact on the surrounding area.

To accommodate this requirement two large glazed windows were incorporated in to the design, so that the working spiral cooler would be fully visible to passers by on the adjacent A556.

The spiral enclosure was designed as a dual compartment to house the two spiral drums. Designed to cool 9,000 loaves of bread to 12 degrees centigrade in 70 minutes, the two spiral drums towered 9.5m high, each with a diameter of 4.8m.

Parkin O’Donnell Ltd were appointed by Frank Roberts to Project Manage the whole of the works, inclusive of the spiral bread cooler and associated refrigeration plant. In addition we were also assigned with the task of obtaining Local Authority Planning and Building Control consent.

In association with the new bread cooler, a refrigeration plant room was constructed and new glazing systems were introduced into the front elevation of the existing production plant.
